Australia Day Ride - January 26th 2012

The rain held off long enough for the ride around Hervey Bay and ending at Dayman Park Urangan. A special thanks to the support crew. Photos by Janet

Gundiah Ride - November 13th 2011

Sunday morning saw over 60 members from the three FCBUG branches descend upon the pub at Gundiah for the start of the ride to Bauple and back - abut 45 klms. Three graded groups were operated. Morning tea at the nut farm and lunch back at the pub were included. Photos - C. Beattie

Tour de Bay - October 16th 2011

After a very eventful Saturday night in the Bay, with the big storms that came through and made a trail of destruction through some suburbs, the Sunday morning was calm dry and sunny. Many riders turned up to participate in all of the different distances and levels in perfect conditions, many FCBUG members in their orange and purple tops. After all setting off in perfect conditions, a lot of the bugs took on the 64kms route with the 5 hills (very challenging, especially up Ghost Hill) of Hervey Bay and all made it with smiles on their faces only to arrive back at the finish line and able to sit back and enjoy a well earned breakfast in the park at Urangan. story - D. Mountain Bike Program - Throughout 2011

The Mountain Bike Program that has been running in 2011 has been a huge success. Funding was granted through the Department on Communities and with this we have managed to run 7 Mountain bike days.

A number of young people have been involved at various stages, some for the whole 7 outings, others when they could manage it. Over the time the skills and fitness levels of all participants, both young and old, have improved dramatically. Some have learnt to ride around obstacles instead of through them, although from the many unplanned dismounts, there is still some learning to be done.

Thanks to the volunteers that help out each time, not only do the participants get an exhausting workout but also a healthy BBQ at the end of each ride.

The rides this year have centred around the local area but next year we are looking to expand our horizons. With added fund raising and support we are looking further afield to try these new skills on different tracks.

Howard Branch Bike-Fit Afternoon - August 23rd 2011

Dennis & Lorna arrived at Mark & Sue's place at Pacific Haven with the clubs 'Bike Fit Kit' in hand. Another nine riders with their bikes including a tandem were adjusted to suit. According to Lorna, the 100th member was processed with the kit. Congratulations Reese, but sorry, no prizes other than another helping of clay-oven cooked roast eaten after all the bike fit-outs.

Biggenden Weekend - July 29-31 2011

A challenging circuit ride left Biggenden and headed over undulating country through Degilbo, then on to Didcot, over to Gooroolba to meet the highway heading to Ban Ban Springs. Here we had a well deserved break before heading back to Biggenden over a few more hills. The one good thing about going up hill is that you get to come down the other side.

Although we had a day of no rain and quite warm conditions, we had a strong head wind for the last half of the ride providing character building conditions. The ride was approximately 95kms and well worth the effort.

To wind down, a climb of Mount Walsh was tackled by 14 riders.

Bundy City to Coast Community Ride - June 2011

Twelve FCBUG members joined 530 other participants and braved early morning heavy mist that could be seen floating visibly in the air. Just after the start this lifted to become a bright clear day. Most of our riders were from our Howard branch and found the pace much to their liking, both there and back to the start.

Cania Gorge Tour - May 2011

Recently a group from FCBug travelled to the idyllic Cania Gorge for a weekend of riding, socialising, walking and fun. Accommodation ranged from tents, camper trailers, A’ Vans and cabins. The night time cool weather was overcome with a roaring camp fire each night with cooking, laughter, guitars and other musical instruments and lots of singing. We had 2 rides on Saturday morning – the first being 75kms heading towards Monto and then detouring to Mulgildie before heading back to Monto to meet up with the others at a wonderful coffee shop called - the Gallery and Garden Café - in Lister Street. It is well worth a stop for coffee if you are ever passing through. The second ride of 50kms headed straight to Monto where we all met for coffee before returning to the Tourist Retreat Caravan Park. Some keen campers took advantage of the great area and headed out for a walk in the afternoon, while others headed for the dam and the spillway which was still overflowing from all of the wet weather we have had. Sunday’s ride was a choice of riding to the dam wall, a bird watching cruise or the challenge of climbing the hill on the main road heading north. A lesson many travellers learnt on the way to Monto was not to follow one particular driver through mud holes. It didn’t take all that long to drag the car and van out of the mud so we could continue on our way – and the crystal glasses were unbroken by the experience. A great weekend was had by all.

Mountains At Murgon Ride - March 2011

he Mountains at Murgon weekend in early March saw approx. 40 riders set up camp on Friday ready to attack Boat Mountain early on Saturday morning. The conditions were far from favourable, being damp and foggy, which made riding interesting – especially the downhill bits. Everyone exercised great skill and caution however, and there were no mishaps. A noisy and enjoyable morning tea stop at Goomeri was followed by the ride home – again up hill. An afternoon winery ride was only taken up by a few as again the weather was not being kind to us. Better weather saw most riders take on the Sunday triangular ride of 35kms. Most showed a lot of determination and good map reading and listening skills to get back to the start. Neil eventually found his way home after covering a considerably longer distance than the rest of us. A few brave souls stayed on and again rode the Mountain on Monday morning.

Bundy City to Coast Ride June 2010

Around 25 members from our group turned up to support our sister BUG's (the 'Mad Cycologists') annual event. Another fine, sunny day in paradise saw over 600 riders take part in this 20 kilometer event.

(pre)Australia Day BBQ 2010

On the 23rd January, after the regular Saturday morning ride in Hervey Bay, the club held it's annual pre-Australia Day Pizza and BBQ bash at Mark and Sue's place at the Pacific Haven Airpark. Features of the day were unlimited wood fired pizzas from the clay oven amongst many other culinary delights.

Entertainment extended to a private aerobatics display for the party by neighbour and guest, Mr John Jackson in his Russian Yak 52. For those needing even more excitement, Brad brought along his 3 meter long pet carpet python.

Some members stayed overnight and were treated to a cycle tour of the area and a BBQ breakfast the next day.

A full set CD of this event can be supplied on request to a smiling webmaster.
